A man was arrested Tuesday morning in Paso Robles on suspicion of passing counterfeit money at a number of stores and restaurants.

An officer recognized Justin Robert Fontecchio, 25, of Paso Robles from security camera footage he viewed while investigating counterfeit cases in the city, according to a Paso Robles Police Department news release.

When the officer tried to stop Fontecchio while he was walking near the 100 block of Niblick Road, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee, punching an officer in the face and injuring the officer’s hand.

Paso Robles police have been trying to identify suspects in at least eight counterfeit cases in the area. Fontecchio is suspected of passing counterfeit currency at a CVS drugstore, a Taco Bell restaurant and a Wal-Mart store.

On Tuesday afternoon, police were checking to see if Fontecchio was involved in any other Paso Robles crimes. Police expected to book him into San Luis Obispo County Jail later in the day pending the conclusion of the investigation, Paso Robles police Lt. Ty Lewis said.
