A suspect in the alleged attempted kidnapping of a woman on Ontario Ridge Trail was taken into custody Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jose Alfredo Martinez, 41, of Santa Maria was spotted by a sheriff’s deputy near Shell Beach Bluff Trail at 3 p.m. and arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping.

Martinez had a warrant for his arrest from Santa Barbara County for failing to appear in court on a charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

The alleged attempted kidnapping took place Monday, when a woman hiking in Avila Beach reported being grabbed by a man who tried to drag her into nearby bushes. She escaped and notified police, but authorities were unable to find the man.

Then a man matching Martinez’s description was seen at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Pirates Cove parking lot in Avila Beach by three women who reported he was openly engaged in a lewd act. During both encounters, Martinez was described as shirtless and wearing mesh athletic shorts.

Martinez was being held Thursday in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 781-4550.
