A Redlands man struck by an alleged drunken driver on Friday has died, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

Alvino Figueroa, 89, was removed from life support at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center at 4:45 p.m. on Monday and “passed away peacefully.”

He was hit by 63-year-old Dennis Whittinghill of Los Osos, who was driving under the influence, near the 600 block of Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo at about 6 p.m., police said.

Whittinghill was turning west onto Higuera Street while heading north on Broad Street.

Whittinghill was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and later posted bail. The case has been forwarded to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of additional charges relating to Figueroa’s death, police said.

The crash investigation is being handled by the traffic safety unit of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
