An elderly Redlands man is hospitalized in critical condition after being hit by a suspected DUI driver on Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo on Friday evening.

The driver, Dennis Whittinghill, 63, of Los Osos, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI resulting in injury to another person, said Sgt. Jeff Booth of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

Whittinghill was turning west onto the 600 block of Higuera from northbound Broad Street at about 6 p.m. when he hit Redlands resident Alvino Figueroa, 89, who was crossing the street, Booth said. Figueroa was taken by ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit on Saturday, hospital spokesman Ron Yukelson said.

Whittinghill was taken to County Jail on Friday but was no longer in custody Saturday morning, according to jail information.
