CHP car sideswiped by wrong-way driver on Hwy. 1

A California Highway Patrol officer’s vehicle sustained minor damage after it was struck Wednesday evening by a suspected DUI driver heading the wrong way on Highway 1.

At about 8:12 p.m., the officer was stopped on the right shoulder of southbound Highway 1 south of the California Men’s Colony when she witnessed a 2008 Honda Civic traveling north in the southbound lane, the CHP said in a news release.

The Civic passed the officer, who flipped a U-turn and pursued it with sirens and emergency lights activated. The officer overtook the vehicle and stopped her car across both lanes at Paseo De Caballo to prevent the driver from continuing and to warn oncoming traffic of the wrong-way driver.

The Civic then veered around the patrol car through a left-turn lane, sideswiping the left front corner of the patrol vehicle. After another short pursuit, the driver pulled over just north of the prison.

Maria Theresa Slavin, 51, of Morro Bay, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail. She was no longer listed as in custody Thursday morning.
