A Los Osos man was arrested shortly after allegedly throwing a sledgehammer through a glass front door of the Morro Bay Police Department on Thursday night.

Police said Friday that just before 8 p.m., Michael Andrew Parkerson, 27, approached the entrance and threw the hammer, which broke through both glass and the wooden frame of one of the lobby doors.

Police Chief Amy Christey said Friday the hammer narrowly missed two residents, one a minor, standing in the lobby. They were not injured.

Christey said Parkerson immediately fled the area but was spotted nearby by an officer and arrested after a short foot chase and brief struggle.

Both Parkerson and the officer suffered minor abrasions in the struggle, according to a news release.

Parkerson was arrested and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and willful cruelty to a child with possible injury. Police are also recommending misdemeanor charges of battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest and vandalism.

As of Friday afternoon, he remained in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
