Grover Beach man held on suspicion of robbery at SLO motel

A Grover Beach man was taken into custody on suspicion of robbery after authorities say he pointed a knife at employees in a San Luis Obispo motel Saturday morning.

Joe Sigala, 40, allegedly went into the Best Western Motel on Madonna Avenue at about 11:45 a.m. and confronted employees in the lobby with a knife, San Luis Obispo police said.

Sigala took a master key from one of the workers, went into an empty room and smashed a sliding glass door, according to police. He continued through the motel and was stopped by an officer at gunpoint in the rear parking lot, where Sigala complied with orders to drop his knife and get on the ground while he was taken into custody, police said.

Sigala was treated at a local hospital for a minor injury to a finger from the broken sliding glass door and then booked into County Jail on suspicion of robbery, vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon and drug possession, according to police. Bail was set at $60,000.
