San Luis Obispo police say an anonymous tip of a disturbing image on Craigslist led to the arrest Wednesday of a man they say was seeking sex with underage girls.

Officers arrested Robert George Roe, Jr., 55, on suspicion of intent to commit a sex offense on a minor Wednesday after the tipster pointed out an ad placed on the website Craigslist depicting an image of a man's genitalia accompanying a message soliciting "young girls" for sexual acts, according to a department news release.

Investigators linked the ad to Roe, who they say is a known sex registrant following a 1987 conviction for molesting a child in Arizona.

In an operation this week, a detective posing as a 16 year-old girl made contact with Roe via cell phone and Roe allegedly offered to purchase a hotel room for the purpose of having sex. They agreed to meet Wednesday at a San Luis Obispo hotel, according to the department.

At about 2 p.m., detectives found Roe at the hotel, where a search warrant was served and evidence of the crime was allegedly found.

Roe was arrested and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.

As of Thursday morning, Roe remained in custody in lieu of $30,000 bail.

An arraignment had not yet been set in San Luis Obispo Superior Court Thursday.
