A registered sex offender living in San Luis Obispo was arrested Tuesday for allegedly violating his parole, the same day he was reported walking in front of a local elementary school.

Robert Anthony Menendez, 35, is not being charged with any crime at or near the school, but was found to have failed to appear at a scheduled parole hearing on Monday, San Luis Obispo police said in a news release.

At about 8 a.m. Tuesday, Menendez was allegedly walking near Sinsheimer Elementary School and was described as suspicious by a witness who called police after identifying Menendez on the Megan’s Law website. The witness last spotted Menendez in the area of Augusta Street and Laurel Lane a few blocks from the school, police said.

Police found Menendez on Tuesday afternoon at his apartment on the 1100 block of Laurel Lane and arrested him.

According to the Megan's Law website, Menendez has been convicted of rape by force and sodomy on a person 14 or younger.

On Wednesday, Menendez remained on a parole hold at San Luis Obispo County Jail.
