Scammers posing as magazine-selling students defraud Templeton seniors

Officials with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office are warning residents of a possible scam that has so far targeted several residents of the Templeton Gardens Senior Apartments.

Witnesses reported Sunday that two young women posed as students from Templeton High School and claimed to be selling magazine subscriptions as a fundraiser for the school’s athletics program.

The Sheriff’s Office says seven elderly victims gave the women checks and cash totaling more than $1,000.

Templeton High School said there is no current fundraiser.

The women are described as white and between the ages of 18 to 20 years of age. One woman is described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall with long curly black hair who was wearing black tights and a blue tank top over a white shirt; the second is approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall with light brown hair and wearing a red top.

Anyone who thinks they may be a victim or has additional information is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 781-4550.
