A dispute between a driver and her passenger inside a moving vehicle resulted in a rollover crash Wednesday morning in Paso Robles.
At approximately 10:05 a.m., the Paso Robles Police Department received multiple reports of a single-vehicle rollover at the South Spring Street exit from northbound Highway 101. Officers and members of the city’s Department of Emergency Services as well as California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire were dispatched to the scene.
According to Paso Robles police, an initial investigation into the incident indicated that the two adults inside the vehicle — a male and a female — at some point became involved in a domestic dispute. During the incident, the male passenger allegedly grabbed the vehicle’s steering wheel and pulled the emergency brake, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and roll over.
The female driver was injured and trapped in the vehicle while the male passenger allegedly escaped and fled the scene on foot.

A witness later spotted the man a short time later at the Albertson’s grocery store on the 100 block of Niblick Road and called police. Responding officers located 34-year-old Jefferey Jason Barnes of Atascadero and determined that the rollover crash was an intentional act.
Barnes was arrested without incident and treated at a local hospital for minor injuries before being booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of one count of domestic violence and one count of assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies.
The female driver was also taken to a nearby hospital and treated for moderate injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the incident, according to a news release.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Barnes remained in County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
