A Marysville man was sentenced to a year in jail Thursday for his involvement in a fatal North County car accident.
Eric Wellington, 33, had pleaded no contest in January to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, a felony. During the September 2012 accident on Highway 46 near McMillan Road, Cirigo Arias, 50, of Kettleman City, was killed.
According the CHP, Wellington had made an unsafe turn in his 2002 Ford Expedition near Shandon when he hit Arias, who was driving a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Driver fatigue was initially cited as a reason for the accident, but Wellington was eventually arrested and charged with manslaughter.
“This case has been a wake-up call for him,” his defense attorney, Jim Maguire said in court.
According to his obituary, Arias, an agricultural laborer, is survived by a wife, three children and seven grandchildren.
While Wellington was sentenced to a year in jail, he was given credit for 140 days already served.
