14 arrested during Steve Aoki concert at Cal Poly

Police arrested 14 people and an additional six were sent to the hospital during a concert on Cal Poly’s campus Friday night.

According to university police Chief George Hughes, six students were among those arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication at the concert featuring electronic music artist Steve Aoki. Another person who is not a Cal Poly student was arrested on suspicion of possession of Ecstasy.

Of those hospitalized, five were taken to the emergency room for over-intoxication, and a sixth person refused transport for a minor cut on the head.

Hughes said Tuesday that his department assigned five officers to the event, which was held in the on-campus Rec Center, and three more officers assisted in transporting people to jail.

Associated Students Inc., which sponsored the event, staffed the center with an additional 20 private security guards.

Hughes said approximately 4,000 people attended the concert.

“This was a larger event than usual,” Hughes said. “And with larger crowds come larger problems.”

Ron Yukelson, spokesman for Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, confirmed Tuesday that the concertgoers were taken to the facility for alcohol intoxication, treated and later discharged. He added that hospital staff heard about the concert through word of mouth and were able to plan ahead to ensure enough emergency room staff was on hand, as they do for Week of Welcome and holidays known for high alcohol consumption.
