A Nipomo man was arrested Thursday after he was allegedly driving while intoxicated and failed to stop for a red light, hit another vehicle and then fled the scene of the crash and barricaded himself in his home, according to CHP.
Gerardo Avalos remained in San Luis Obispo County Jail on Friday morning in lieu of $115,000 bail. He was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, felony hit and run, driving on a suspended license, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer, according to the Sheriff’s Office jail information website.
In a news release, CHP said Avalos, 48, was heading west on Tefft Street about 12:48 p.m. Thursday. At the same time another driver, 88-year-old Betty Davies of Nipomo, was driving south on Mary Avenue and proceeded to turn left onto Tefft Street on a green light.
Avalos failed to stop for the red light, according to CHP, and collided with the left side of Davies’ vehicle. She was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria with minor injuries.

Avalos fled to his home in the 300 block of Jupiter Drive and refused to exit after being told to do so by law enforcement personnel. Officers forced a door open and took him into custody without incident, according to CHP.
He was not injured in the incident, nor was any law enforcement personnel.
