Palm tree fire at SLO apartment complex called suspicious

Five palm trees that caught on fire scorched the siding of an apartment complex at 1185 Foothill Blvd. at 2:48 this morning – and threatened to spread -- but the fire was quickly brought under control by but San Luis Obispo city firefighters, the department said.

No one was injured.

A total of 25 people helped to fight the fire, using four fire engines (including one from Cal Fire) and a ladder truck.

The cause of the fire is deemed suspicious. Arson investigators believe it was caused by a human because of items found on the site, and because no accidental, non-human cause was possible.

A man was arrested in the area for an unrelated crime of breaking and entering around the time of the fire. Investigators are trying to determine if he was responsible for the fire, and if it was accidental or intentional, said Jeff Gater, battalion chief for the San Luis Obispo Fire department.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department has designated the area a crime scene, according to a news release by the department.
