A Santa Maria man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman at gunpoint at her San Luis Obispo hotel room early Thursday.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested Gregory Erwin, 49, at his Santa Maria home on charges of armed robbery, rape, making terrorist threats, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.

The victim called police at 1:27 a.m. Thursday from the San Luis Inn and Suites on Santa Rosa Street, saying that she has been sexually assaulted and robbed at gunpoint.

The victim told officers that Erwin had agreed to meet her at the hotel room sometime after midnight. When he showed up, he sexually assaulted her at gunpoint while threatening to kill her, removed cash from her purse and left the area, according to authorities.

The victim followed Erwin to the hotel’s parking lot and got his license plate, which she gave to authorities.

Investigators later found Erwin at his home in Santa Maria and arrested him. A search of his home led officers to evidence of the crime, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working with other law enforcement agencies to determine if Erwin is responsible for other sexual assaults in San Luis Obispo County.
