An overturned panga boat was discovered at about 8 a.m. Friday about three-fourths of a mile north of Piedras Blancas, according to the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office, the third such boat found on the North Coast this year.

All three pangas, a type of Central American fishing boat, have been found north of Piedras Blancas. Unlike the previous two incidents, no marijuana was discovered Friday. Investigators said it appeared, though, that the boat had been used to transport marijuana.

No suspects were found in the vicinity of the boat, which had two outboard motors, six mostly empty gas containers and some clothing.

Authorities confiscated 1,800 pounds of marijuana from an abandoned panga on the beach on May 24. On Sept. 6, after a witness spotted a boat being unloaded, the Sheriff’s Office seized more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana and arrested 20 people who were turned over to federal authorities.
