A San Luis Obispo man was arrested following a foot chase Sunday night in Atascadero.

According to a Police Department news release, officers were called to the 8800 block of El Camino Real shortly before 10 p.m. after a complaint that a suspicious person was knocking on the window of a residence. The witness, who did not know the suspect, provided a description, and officers found a man who fit the description at a gas station at Montecito and East Front Street.

When an Atascadero officer approached, the suspect, 29-year-old Russell Craig Lowrie, fled on foot, but he was caught and detained on El Camino Real just south of Santa Rosa Road, a short distance from the gas station.

According to police, Lowrie admitted to possessing methamphetamine.

As they investigated, officers said, they learned that Lowrie was responsible for stealing a vehicle from a business in San Luis Obispo and then driving it to Atascadero. The vehicle was found in the parking lot of a nearby business, and Lowrie admitted to stealing it, police said.

Lowrie was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
