A 19-year-old San Luis Obispo man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly trying to drive off in a vehicle that he had just rear-ended.
According to police, Douglas Kaplan was driving south on Broad Street approaching Tank Farm Road around 4:30 p.m. when he ran into the back of a vehicle driven by Armon Johnson, 48, of Paso Robles.
Kaplan and Johnson got out of their vehicles to discuss the accident, according to police.
When Kaplan realized police had been notified, he attempted to leave in Johnson’s vehicle, police said. Johnson wrestled with Kaplan to stop him.

Joseph Zavala, 46, of Morro Bay witnessed the confrontation and intervened to help Johnson, according to police.
Both Johnson and Zavala were injured in the struggle, but they “did not require immediate medical attention,” police said. The two men detained Kaplan until police officers arrived.
Kaplan was being booked into County Jail on suspicion of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon.
