A man and woman are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an on an Atascadero woman last month.

Ana Renee Escobedo, 32, and Albert Ernest Moore, 33, are suspected in the assault that took place at about 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Carl’s Jr. at 7095 El Camino Real. They have pleaded not guilty.

The night of Dec. 27, Escobedo exited a red SUV and then used her hands to hit the woman, causing her to fall on the ground on her back and begin kicking to keep Escobedo away, according to the Atascadero Police Department.

Police said Escobedo began stabbing the woman with a small knife, resulting in a puncture wound to her left leg and several small cuts to her legs.

Escobedo then fled and Moore drove the vehicle away, according to police, who arrested Moore and Escobedo after a traffic stop of the SUV on Capistrano Avenue in Atascadero on the morning of Dec. 28.

Moore was driving the vehicle and Escobedo was lying down in the back seat under a blanket at the time of the stop, department officials said.

Police believe that the attack was the result of a dispute over property possibly being stolen from Escobedo by someone associated with the alleged victim.

Escobedo and Moore remain in custody in County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
