A handcuffed man led authorities on a brief chase Thursday afternoon after breaking free from a patrol car in which he was being detained.

Sheriff’s narcotics investigators had arrested Joshua Allen Smith, 29, of Paso Robles, for an outstanding drug warrant.

During Smith’s trip to County Jail, the patrol car he was in stopped at 3:06 p.m. to assist in another investigation, according to authorities.

That’s when Smith, still in his handcuffs, allegedly broke a window and escaped in the area of Santa Ysabel and Curbaril avenues in Atascadero.

After a two-hour search that involved sheriff’s patrol units, the Atascadero Police Department and a CHP air unit, Atascadero police located Smith near a Vons grocery store on El Camino Real in heavy brush.

Smith is suspected of possession of a narcotic, vandalism and escape with force. The warrants were for alleged possession of a narcotic, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm.

Bail was set at $65,000, but Smith remained in County Jail on an active hold.
