Fifteen people were arrested Wednesday evening after 11 Sheriff’s Department deputies, assisted by two state park rangers and an animal control officer, conducted a sweep of a transient camp in Oceano.
The camp was located at the end of Delta Street in Oceano, near the Pismo Dunes, said department spokesman Rob Bryn.
Many of the people were arrested between 6 and 9 p.m. on suspicion of misdemeanor crimes, including littering, being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and cutting down or destroying wood growing on someone else’s land. One man was arrested on suspicion of having a deadly weapon, also a misdemeanor.
“We have seen a pattern of assaults and petty crime in the area that seemed related to persons associated with this encampment and serious trash issues that are impacting the environment of the adjacent dunes,” Cmdr. Ken Conway of the Sheriff’s Department’s south station said in a news release.

Bryn said a team of county inmates would clean the area within the next 10 days.
