The Atascadero Police Department issued a warning Monday of a telephone scam currently making the rounds to city residents.
According to police, dispatchers have received numerous reports from people citywide who were contacted by someone claiming to be from the U.S. Department of Treasury stating that an arrest warrant was issued for the resident after they miscalculated their previously filed taxes.
The caller will claim the resident can remedy the situation by sending them a payment. Officials say the callers are pushy and may call back several times.
No one had been victimized by the scam as of Monday afternoon, and the department said the best way to handle such a caller is to inform them that authorities have been notified of the scam or to simply not return their calls.
