Semipro tackle football is coming to the Coast Union High School stadium on Saturday, March 28, when the 805 Falcons take on the Sanger Renegades from Fresno County at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults; children 12 and younger are free.
The 805 Falcons — with 55 players — are in their second year as members of the San Joaquin Valley Football League; last season, the team posted a 12-2 record. The Falcons are renting Coast Union’s facilities for five games this spring: Saturday’s game; April 11 and 25; and May 9 and 30.
Team owner Joe Jensen, a Cal Poly graduate, recruits high school graduates (and others into their 30s who are “in shape”) from Paso Robles to Lompoc; players pay $200 to participate and provide their own equipment.
Former Bronco Josh Jackson — a 2009 Coast graduate — plays linebacker for the 805 Falcons. Jackson made 51 tackles his junior year and 56 tackles as a Coast Union senior. Other players have played for high schools including Morro Bay, Paso Robles and Atascadero, while the roster also includes several Allan Hancock College products.
The team was founded in 2013 with a mission to “provide low-cost, high-quality football entertainment to fans after the high school, NCAA and NFL football seasons have ended,” according to its website.
The Falcons have played two games so far this season, opening with a 12-0 loss to the California Broncos but rebounding with a 14-2 win over the Cen Cal Stars.
The Cambria-based squad plays in the league’s Southern Division along with Cen Cal, the Valley Vikings, Sanger Renegades and California Broncos. The Clovis Titans, Southeast Dragons, Central Valley Raiders and Central Valley Hurricanes make up the Northern Division.
The Falcons are the only team in the league to play their home games outside the San Joaquin Valley.
Other teams play at sites including Richgrove High School, the Grape Bowl in Lodi, Modesto and Madera High School.
The 10-game season concludes June 6, with the Falcons playing their final game on the road against the Sanger Renegades at Richgrove High School on that date.
