Coast Union cross country team places first in group at Cal Poly

The Coast Union cross country team placed first in Division 5 at the Cal Poly Invitational on Oct. 18 for the first time in school history. According to Coach Jim Hurley, this was also the first time Jack MacKinnon and Sage Deack finished in the top seven in their division.

“This is the best young team Coast Union has ever had,” Hurley said. “Our top seven runners are sophomores and freshmen.”

The top seven varsity boys at Saturday’s Cal Poly Invitational — which included more than 100 runners from Monterey County and Bakersfield, among other areas — were Jez Lawson, 42nd (18:51); Paul Butterfield, 68th (21:00); Oliver Fend, 70th (21:11); Nick Roper, 77th (22:17); MacKinnon, 84th (24:13); Roberto Cueva, 85th (24:21); and Deack, 87th (24:40).

Also finishing for Coast Union in the boys category were Vincent Cueva (24:58); Will Stephenson (25:03); Alam Romo (27:18); Nic Barth (28:05); Sam MacKinnon (28:58); and Tyler Seng (29:19).

The two Coast Union girls were Gigi Stoothoff, 37th (23:10); and Cammi Tatham, 89th (27:15).
