Gigi Stoothoff and Jez Lawson were top finishers for the girls and boys, respectively, as the Coast Union cross-country team took part in its first meet Saturday, Sept. 13.
The annual Morro Bay Invitational attracts hundreds of student athletes from across California, and the Broncos showed very well, according to their coaches, Ayen Johnson and Jim Hurley. All Coast Union runners entered as junior varsity (because all runners are either freshmen or sophomores).
Out of 186 high school girls in the race, Stoothoff came in 11th overall. Her time was 22 minutes, 51 seconds. Cammie Tatham finished 62nd at 26:09.
For the boys, last season’s MVP Jez Lawson placed 25th out of 194 boys in the race with a time of 19:22. Nick Roper finished 86th (21:21); Jack MacKinnon was 111th (22:21); Paul Butterfield was 116th (22:28); Roberto Cueva was 147th (24:32); Will Stephenson was 155th (25:09); Zander Stoothoff was 163rd (25:44); Sam MacKinnon was 168th (26:04); Sage Deack was 178th (27:42); Tyler Seng was 185th (29:57); David Nolan was 187th (30:10); and Alam Romo was 192nd (32:14).
