The Broncos rolled over the Cuyama Valley Bears on Friday, May 9, 10-0 in five innings, thanks to the pitching of junior Jake McAvoy and the hot bats of senior Tommy Howard and junior Gehrig Kniffen.
Coast Union is 9-0 in the Coast Valley League and the Broncos play the second place Valley Christian Academy Lions (7-1) today, May 15, to close out league play. On Friday, May 16, the Broncos face Dunn School in the final game of the regular season.
On May 9, Coast Union’s McAvoy (6-1) went five innings, striking out seven, walking one, allowing just three hits and lowering his ERA to 2.88. Howard, who has collected 13 hits in his last six games, was three-for-three against the Bears and knocked in a pair of runs; he is hitting at a .489 clip.
Kniffen was two-for-four and drove in two runs against Cuyama Valley (6-5 in League play), raising his batting average to a team-leading .587. Sophomore Lane Sutherland (hitting .411) drove in two runs on May 9 and threw a runner out attempting to steal second base.

Senior Grant Magnuson had a hit and drove in two runs against the Bears (he is batting .474), and junior Zander Stoothoff drove in two runs and raised his batting average to .321 in the process. Senior Emmany Godinez had a hit, an RBI, stole two bases (bringing his total to 22 steals in 24 attempts), and raised his average to .524 with an impressive on-base percentage of .697.
After their two games this week (today and Friday, May 15 and 16) the Broncos will begin CIF playoffs next week. Since they are a lock to win the Coast Valley League (even if they should lose to Valley Christian Thursday, they would be 9-1 to Valley Christian’s 8-1; Coast shut out Valley Christian 12-0 on March 27), it is highly likely they will open the playoffs at home.
