The Broncos boys varsity basketball team came away with a split of four games in its annual Coast Union Invitational Tournament (Dec. 26-28), beating Morro Bay and Caruthers but losing to Fairmont Prep and Immanuel.

Quinten Raethke scored 14 points to pace the Broncos’ 50-44 victory against Morro Bay on Dec. 26. Angel Avina picked up eight points and grabbed nine rebounds in the game. The key for the Broncos was their ability to dominate the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Pirates 17-11. The teams were knotted at 33 going into the final quarter.

On Dec. 27, the Broncos won a thriller in overtime against Caruthers, 56-52. In that game, Raethke racked up 16 points before leaving with an injury. Logan Brandt had 12 points and hauled down seven rebounds for Coast Union.

The next day, Coast lost to Immanuel 54-41 — with Avina’s 13 points leading the Broncos — and later fell to Fairmont Prep, 60-36 in the second half of the doubleheader.

Freshman guard Jez Lawson was named to the all-tournament team.
