Last year’s Coast Union softball team set a high bar

Spring must be here or just around the corner if baseball and softball seasons are about to kick off at Coast Union High School. In fact, the softball team is expected to have an additional spring in its step with the arrival of some freshman talent, including pitcher Ellie Magnuson — the sister of junior baseball and football player Grant Magnuson — who has played club softball for several years in preparation for high school competition.

Based on last year’s 11-1 record in the Coast Valley League (12-6 overall), this year’s Lady Broncos should be very competitive. They will be shooting to go deeper in the playoffs than last year, when they lost their opening post-season tilt.

Returning players who made a big difference last season include seniors Morgan May and Gabby Bucio.

Last year May’s batting average was. 311. She had a home run, a triple, a respectable .418 on-base percentage and she drove in 11 runs.

Bucio drove in 18 runs, belted six doubles, hit .388 and stole 18 bases.

Sophomores expected to pick up where they left off last year as freshmen include Remy Corbet, Patty Bucio and Sage Radecki.

Corbet put together a .467 batting average and 27 stolen bases; she drove in 25 runs and had a monster on-base percentage of .625 and a beefy slugging percentage of .667.

Patty Bucio hit .320, had a homer, two triples and two doubles, stole 21 bases, and had an on-base percentage of .500.

Radecki stole 24 bases, had a .412 batting average, knocked in 25 runs and had an on-base percentage of .483; her slugging percentage was off the charts at .824.

Cristina Plasencia, who led the Lady Broncos soccer team in 2013 with 14 goals and 34 total points, had a banner year playing softball in 2012. Plasencia led the Lady Broncos with a .500 batting average, led the team with 33 runs batted in, stole 21 bases and had a sparkling on-base percentage of .613.

The Coast Union softball season opens Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Templeton. The first home game for the Lady Broncos is at 4 p.m. Friday, March 1, against Nipomo.
