The Coast Union cross country team competed in a field of 14 San Luis Obispo County schools Saturday, Oct. 3, in a meet at Atascadero. Coach Jim Hurley reported that the Broncos placed sixth in the girls junior varsity division and seventh in the boys frosh-soph category.
“We beat Mission Prep, and we beat Atascadero,” Hurley reported.
“Of course we were up against Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo and the large schools in the county as well.
“But overall, I was very pleased. Our number three man, Ethan Walters, didn’t run; we might have picked up a few more places with Ethan. Paul Butterfield was right up there until the end and placed fourth overall.”

Butterfield was second in the frosh-soph category among about 50 runners, Hurley explained. Butterfield does well in races because “he works out hard in practice and always gives us 110 percent. He likes to get out in front.”
Butterfield placed fourth 18 minutes, 34 seconds; Dante Garcia was 16th in 19:50; David May was 54th in 23:15; Will Stephenson finished 68th in 26:04; Tyler Seng was 70th in 27:07; David Nolan placed 72nd in 28:28; Sam MacKinnon finished 73rd in 29:52; and Caesar Hernandez was 106th in 32:46.
Gigi Stoothoff placed 2nd in the Girls JV division; Shannon Clark took 6th in 24:23; Bella Raethke placed 18th in 25:33; Vanessa Ramirez was 30th in 27:29; and Iveth De Jesus placed 35th in 29:36.
The cross country team competed against Mission Prep in a dual meet at Coast Union Wednesday, Oct. 7; the results will be in the Tribune on Thursday, Oct. 8.
