San Luis Obispo County’s Food Bank Coalition will begin a USDA food distribution program for San Simeon residents Tuesday, May 26, to be continued on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Each qualifying family will receive a bag of shelf-stable food items and a bag of produce. To qualify, applicants must be 18 years or older, and self-certify that they meet the monthly and/or annual income requirements.
The distributions will occur from 5 to 6 p.m. in front of Oceanside Inn, 9490 Avonne Ave., San Simeon. Dates can change because of holidays and unforeseen circumstances. Recipients should check the Food Bank website at www.slo foodbank.org for the most current list.
Also, the Oceanside Community Room will be the site of a four-week July breakfast-snack program for kids. The program will run from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays from July 6 through July 30. The breakfast items could include fruit, muffins, string cheese, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt juices and milk, although the assortment is likely to change daily.
A similar program proposed for Cambria youngsters fell through because of a lack of volunteers, according to coordinator Renee Samaniego-Lundy, who said that if people will help operate the program, it might be scheduled for summer 2016.
