Former Cambria resident Elizabeth Pollard is celebrating her 100th birthday this weekend.

Pollard was born Elizabeth Bissell on Oct. 26, 1914, in Canandaigua, N.Y., and now lives in Sonora. She worked as branch library assistant in Cambria for many years, a position she remembers as “my favorite job.”

Pollard moved with her family to Atascadero at age 9, living on 5 acres just outside the city limits.

“Mr. Morse across the street had a horse-drawn ice cream cart, and we loved to get ice cream from him,” she recalled.

She attended high school in Atascadero, where she graduated during the Great Depression.

“Work was hard to find,” she said. “I did get a job as a bookkeeper in a garage, working six days a week.”

After the United States entered World War II, Pollard joined the Navy WAVES and got a job in the finance office at Camp Roberts, north of Paso Robles.

She married Wilson “Buzz” Pollard in 1945 and moved to Colorado to live with her husband’s family before returning to Atascadero. The couple moved to Morro Bay after their son was born a couple of years later and subsequently moved to Cambria when Wilson Pollard retired.

She began working at the Cambria Library after her son left home to attend college.

Anyone who wants to wish Elizabeth Pollard a happy birthday may send cards or greetings and may do so at 19929 Greenley Road, Sonora, CA 95370.
