Bikes for Tikes seeks holiday donations

Bikes for Tikes is looking for holiday donations of bicycles to refurbish and distribute to children in need in San Luis Obispo County.

James Ellman, founder of Bikes for Tikes, distributed 69 bicycles last year to the San Luis Obispo Women’s Shelter, Prado Day Center, Grass Roots II, Toys for Tots, the Family Care Network and several churches. Many of the bikes were distributed to needy families in Cambria.

Ellman founded Bikes for Tikes in 1993 and began refurbishing bikes for migrant workers. In addition to donating locally, the organization donated 50 bikes to the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2006. Bikes for Tikes does not accept cash donations but seeks donations of new or used bikes of all sizes, as well as bike helmets.

To arrange for Ellman to pick up a donated bike, call 924-0520. For more information, visit the website at or contact Ellman at
