Cambria’s Scarecrow Festival officially began Wednesday, Oct. 1, but the quirky sculptures began showing up on local sidewalks, stoops and steps a week or so earlier.

This year’s festival theme was saving water, and quite a few of the 2014 entries were based on that topic. There are 80 new scarecrows in all.

The winners — selected Monday, Sept. 29, by three celebrity judges — will be announced at the festival’s Kickoff Party starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Cambria Nursery and Florist, 2801 Eton Road (tickets, $25 at the door).

Viewers can vote in a separate “people’s raffle”; ballots are $1 apiece at the Cambria Chamber, Cambria Beads, Soto’s Market and Garden Shed.
