A Cambria woman was recovering at a local hospital after giving birth along Highway 1 near Cayucos late Monday morning.
At about 11:45 a.m., emergency crews responded to a report of a woman having a baby in a silver Toyota on the shoulder of Highway 1 south of the Cayucos Pier.
When crews from Cal Fire, the Cayucos Fire Department and San Luis Ambulance arrived, the woman had already given birth. Her male partner was in the car with her at the time and helped deliver the child.
The couple, who are only being identified as Cambria residents, were on their way to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo when the woman’s contractions caused them to pull over and seek help, according to several first responders at the scene.

Both were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Daniel Ware, a firefighter with Cal Fire, said Monday afternoon that the mother and child were in good health.
Ware, one of the first on the scene, said that while he has delivered babies in the line of duty before, it is very rare to witness a birth on the side of the road.
