Prescribed burn set for Thursday on North Coast

A prescribed burn is tentatively scheduled for Thursday on about 195 acres of coastal scrub between Cayucos and Harmony, according to the Cambria Fire Department.

Emergency crews plan to gather at Harmony Headlands State Park off Highway 1 starting about 8 a.m.

Whether it actually happens then will depend on weather, wind and brush conditions. When the burn does proceed, it's expected to start at 10 a.m. and be done by 5 p.m. or so.

State Parks, Cal Fire and the Air Pollution Control District are coordinating plans for the burn. The Cambria Fire Department has been invited to participate with its water tender and crew.

Prescribed burns are intended to benefit native plants, increase species diversity and control non-native weeds.

The Harmony Headlands burn is especially intended to encourage native perennial bunch grass and wildflowers and reduce Italian thistle, according to a State Parks news release.

Trails will be closed on the day of the burn.
