Highway 1 will close for three nights to allow work on a bridge and tunnel structure south of Lucia, about 21 miles north of the San Luis Obispo-Monterey county line, Caltrans has announced.
The full closures are set to start at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with the road reopening at 6 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Workers will install bridge joint seal assemblies, one of the final steps in the four-year, $29.5 million project.
After work is completed, expected in January if weather permits, rocks falling off the steep hillside will be able to roll under the bridge and over the tunnel, instead of ending up on the highway and forcing frequent road closures.

Only emergency vehicles will be allowed through during the overnight road closures. Flaggers at each end will enforce the closure.
