Caltrans is overseeing a $1.4 million project to improve turnouts on Highway 1 north of Cayucos.
The turnouts are located on the southbound side of the highway along the Estero Bluffs, and span a three-mile stretch of highway between Cayucos and Villa Creek Road. Six turnouts are being improved.
Crushed stone and paved aprons are being constructed, and invasive weeds are being uprooted. In their place, native shrubs and grasses are being planted. Work is to be completed later this spring, said Jim Shivers, a Caltrans spokesman.
Intermittent shoulder closures are planned from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and 6:30 to 2 p.m. on Fridays.
