The Coast Union varsity volleyball team is going through its traditional tough preseason schedule. Templeton High School defeated the Lady Broncos in straight sets Thursday, Aug. 20.

Coast Union made it close in the first and third games, losing 25-22 and 25-20 while being shut down in the second set, 25-9. Roxy Mertens had four kills and eight digs to lead the Lady Broncos. Karla Soto added three kills and five digs for Coast Union and Sage Radecki chipped in with 18 assists.

After facing two more tough teams this week (Coast lost to Nipomo 25-13, 25-12, 25-15 on Tuesday, Sept. 4; results of Arroyo Grande’s match missed this week’s deadline) the Lady Broncos travel to Santa Ynez Sept. 11 and play their first Coast Valley League game at home at 5 p.m. Sept. 13 versus Shandon. — John FitzRandolph
