Candidates for office can file to run starting Monday

The 2012 election season is about to go local: Candidates who want to serve on area boards can start filing their nomination paperwork on Monday, July 16.

Filing closes Aug. 10, although candidates have a little more time in races for which no incumbent files for reelection. For specifics, go to http://www.slocounty.ca.gov/Assets/CR/Elections/ November+6$!2c+201 2+Presidential+General+Ele ction/ImportantDates. pdf.

With potentially controversial issues that include desalination or other new sources of water, the possible secession of Cayucos from the Coast Unified School District, a pending joint-powers agreement between the Cambria services and healthcare districts and budget woes all around, this local campaign season could be a hotly contested one.

Seats up for election in North Coast races include:

Cambria Community Services District: Board President Allan MacKinnon and directors Muril Clift and Gail Robinette;

Coast Unified School District: Board President Cindy Fratto and trustees Robert Gong and Victoria Dandurand;

Cambria Community Healthcare District: Board President Kristi Jenkins and Trustee Greg Bates; and

San Simeon Community Services District: Vice Chairman Ralph McAdams, directors Leroy Price, Alan Fields (four-year terms) and a vacancy left by the resignation of Terry Lambeth (two-year term).

No incumbents have publicly announced yet if they’ll run for reelection.

The county Clerk Recorder’s office is at 1055 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo. The phone number is 781- 5080, and the website is www.slocounty . ca.gov/clerk.htm. —Kathe Tanner
