The Cambrian

Weather Watch: June gets a bad rap when it comes to ‘gloom’; July, August are worse

One of Cambria’s main attractions is the temperate weather we enjoy all year round. A study of Cambria’s weather pattern has been put together utilizing the last 13 years of temperature data as recorded at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Park Hill and reported weekly in The Cambrian. This data, combined with a subjective evaluation of the type of day that Cambria experiences (sunny, partly sunny, cloudy and rainy) contributes to the following report. A clear day is defined as clear skies from early morning to sunset. A partial clear day means that the fog or clouds clear out during the day followed by sunshine for the remainder of the day (or vice versa).

Since this evaluation is conducted at or near the ocean, where fog and low clouds are more prevalent than all other parts of town, the temperatures and weather information reflect lower temperatures than one might expect to see due to the many microclimates that are within Cambria. The weather year starts in July and ends in June. (Weather year 2012 began July 1, 2011, and ended June 30, 2012.)

Spring 2012 (April to June)

This year Cambria recorded 14.5 inches of rain, which is 5 inches less than the average annual rain that we have experienced over the last 14 years. Since a late spring rain is always beneficial, Cambria recorded 5.5 inches (or 38 percent of this year’s rainfall) between March 15 and the end of April.

During the non-rainy season (May through October), Cambria records only 10 percent, or 1.9 inches of rain, of its annual rainfall, which has been averaging 19.5 inches over the last 14 years.

Summer 2012 (July to September

Even though locals refer to “Gray May” and “June Gloom” when discussing the weather, it is a fact that Cambria experiences 25 days of some fog during the day during July and August as compared with an average of 19 days each during May and June.

Both July and August reflect Cambria’s highest average temperature at 67 degrees. September and October average 64 degrees. Our winter average high is 59. There is only a 7-degree temperature difference between the average highs in summer and winter.

Weather conditions for an average week during the summer season are:

• Two days per week: Clear, sunny days.

• Four days per week: Early morning fog followed by partial clearing and sun.

• One day per week: No sun (cloudy and foggy all day).
