Members of the Grover Heights Lighthouse Club performed in a 135th-birthday party for the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse on Feb. 13, kicking off a week of celebration for the event. The 15 costumed club members, some pictured above, are the ‘Pennies for Piedras Kids,’ who collect pocket change and donations and sponsor fundraising events to help restore the lighthouse’s tower room and light. The station is 14 miles north of Cambria, between Highway 1 and the ocean. The party was designed to thank volunteers and others who have helped make so much progress in restoring the light station and the grounds. Bureau of Land Management, which manages the 13-acre light station, also offered free public tours to celebrate the tower’s birthday; 162 people took the tours on Feb. 16 and 156 toured on Feb. 18. Regular public tours are offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A half-mile interpretive trail provides spectacular ocean views. Displays highlight the history of the tower and the light station; a gift shop offers shopping opportunities. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6-17 and free for ages 5 and under.
