Nearly 1,000 San Luis Obispo County residents turned out for the 31st annual Coastal Cleanup Day, collecting 5,436 pounds of trash and recyclable material at 30 sites countywide.
In all, 981 volunteers took part in the effort Sept. 19.
Volunteers found several unusual items. They picked up an ironing board, a grill/panini maker and a sports mask at Morro Strand South and Highway 41. At Pismo Beach, they found a scooter.
Their total haul was 5,273 pounds of trash and 163 pounds of recyclables. That’s nearly 2,000 pounds more than volunteers collected countywide last September.
