Prescribed burns similar to this one in 2011 in Atascadero is planned for the North Coast area of San Luis Obispo County.

Firefighters plan to burn Wednesday, Feb. 28, piles of brush near the intersection of Highway 1 and San Simeon Creek Road, on the northern edge of Cambria.

Smoke may be evident in the area, and visible farther away. Those nearby who are smoke sensitive should take precautions. The burn is set for roughly from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other brush piles may be burned near the adjacent Washburn campground, according to a media advisory from the San Luis Obispo Coast District of State Parks.

If a burn ban is in effect, no burning will be done until that ban is lifted and officials determine that conditions are good enough to proceed.

The burning process is part of a prescribed-burn program designed to help manage vegetation.

The project is being done by State Parks in cooperation with Cal Fire and the county’s Air Pollution Control District.
