The Green Team of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Luis Obispo County recently hosted an event about the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.

Big Blue Live, a documentary presented by the BBC and PBS about the Monterey Bay National Sanctuary and its recovery from being an ocean desert because of overfishing to a thriving ecosystem, was shown.

Sanctuary advocates Andrew Christie, P.J. Webb and Fred Collins were interviewed by Judith Bernstein on various aspects of the sanctuary.

The event was highlighted by Shell Beach resident, Carol Georgi, receiving the Bill Denneen Environmental Award for her work with the Marine Sanctuary Alliance.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County has been awarded a grant of $4,000 from the Chevron Corporation, continuing its support of the agency’s youth mentoring programs.

According to the local agency, which is based in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, it conducts targeted volunteer recruitment, screening and matching, as well as ongoing support for volunteers, children and families, ensuring child safety to sustain successful long-term relationships.
