An Atascadero man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence after crashing a motorcycle on Highway 101, according to a news release from the CHP . Both he and his passenger suffered major injuries.
About 4:50 p.m., the 35-year-old man and his 23-year-old female passenger, also from Atascadero, were riding a 2007 Harley-Davidson north on Highway 101, north of Avila Beach Drive. The man drove onto the median and lost control of the motorcycle, hitting the guard rail, the news release said. Both the driver and passenger were thrown onto the freeway; they were both wearing helmets.
San Luis Ambulance took them to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver, who was admitted to the hospital for his injuries, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, the news release said. Authorities did not release his identity on Sunday.
The freeway was closed for about 30 minutes after the crash. Any witnesses of the crash are encouraged to call 805-593-3300 and provide contact information for the investigating officer.
