Update, 2:30 p.m. Saturday

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of Friday evening’s drowning at Nacimiento Lake as Dante Garcia Mora, a 16-year-old from Cambria.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Witnesses told authorities the boy had been swimming in an area known as the Point at Heritage Ranch early Friday evening when he swam away from the group. Not long afterward, the boy appeared to be in distress before going underwater, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Members of a Sheriff’s dive team recovered the body about 8:30 p.m. in approximately 14 feet of water, according to the news release.

Update, 10:40 p.m. Friday

A 16-year-old boy whose body was recovered from Nacimiento Lake on Friday evening is from Cambria, but his name has not been released because family members are still being notified, according to a news release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s dive team located the boy’s body about 8:30 p.m. — almost three hours after he was first reported missing — according to the news release.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident as a drowning.

Witnesses told investigators the 16-year-old boy had been swimming with friends in an area known as the Point at Heritage Ranch when he swam away from the group, the news release stated.

The boy then appeared to be in distress before going underwater; after that, bystanders couldn’t find him, according to the news release.

Sheriff’s officials searched for the boy with assistance from Cal Fire, Monterey County park rangers and a Mercy Air helicopter from Fort Hunter-Liggett, authorities said.

No additional information was made available as of late Friday evening.

Update, 9:22 p.m. Friday

Dive team members have located the body of a 16-year-old boy reported missing at Nacimiento Lake on Friday evening, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Sandra Leber confirmed the body recovered from the lake near the Heritage Ranch area was the male teenager who was reported missing at 5:42 p.m.

He was found in the lake about 8:15 p.m., Leber said.

Some of the boy’s family members have been notified, but the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing his name at this time because they are still investigating, Leber said.

Emergency officials are searching Nacimiento Lake for a possible 16-year-old drowning victim, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

As of 7:18 p.m., sheriff’s dive team members were searching the water in the Heritage Ranch area for the male teenager, Sheriff’s Sgt. Sandra Leber said.

She said additional dive team members were en route to the scene.

Crews from Mercy Air out of Fort Hunter-Liggett in southern Monterey County were searching the shoreline, Leber said.

Cal Fire dispatch said it also had emergency responders on scene.

Leber said an emergency call of a missing person at the lake came into dispatchers at 5:42 p.m.
