Arts Obispo, Opera SLO receive $33,000 in state grants

Two local arts organizations received a total of nearly $33,000 in state grants from the California Arts Council.

Arts Obispo, the San Luis Obispo County Arts Council, received a $26,819 grant through the State-Local Partnership program, which “fosters community development through the arts at the county level,” said Caitlin Fitzwater, communications director of the California Arts Council.

The state agency, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, also awarded $3,000 to Arts Obispo via its professional development and consulting grant program. This will enable the local nonprofit to hire two consultants — “one focused on strengthening the board of directors’ aptitude, and the other … on communications development,” Fitzwater said.

She added that Arts Obispo also received grant funding via the Poetry Out Loud program, which challenges students to memorize and recite poems.

In addition, Opera San Luis Obispo received its own $3,000 professional development grant, Fitzwater said, which the nonprofit will use to “secure an experienced local vendor to create programming and design for a much-needed new website.”
