Morro Bay this week selected an interim top cop to lead the Police Department after the departure of outgoing Chief Amy Christey.

Larry J. Todd will assume his new title on Aug. 1, as Christey moves on to take over the Pacific Grove Police Department in Monterey County.

Christey has been Morro Bay’s police chief since she was hired in 2012. She’s expected to start her position in Pacific Grove on Aug. 16.

Todd served as chief of the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department in the Bay Area from 1988 to 2002. After his retirement, Todd went on to act as interim chief in Hollister, Novato, Clearlake and Fairfield, all in Northern California.

City Manager David Buckingham said in an email that recruitment for a permanent police chief is not yet underway. Todd will not be a candidate for the position, he said.
