Free Fourth of July fireworks show planned in Santa Maria

The Santa Maria Fairpark, home of the annual Santa Barbara County Fair, is offering a free fireworks show on July 4.

The fireworks show annually draws about 5,000 spectators, according to a news release from the Fairpark.

Only two professional fireworks shows will be held in San Luis Obispo County this year, in Cayucos and Pismo Beach. Officials in both communities are expecting huge crowds.

The fireworks shows in Morro Bay, Paso Robles and Cambria have been canceled either for financial or fire danger reasons.

The Santa Maria show, which receives financial support from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, is hosted by the city of Santa Maria, the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Fairpark.

The gates open at 3 p.m. on July 4. Local band Unfinished Business will perform at 5 p.m.; the fireworks show starts about 9 p.m.

Admission is free; food and beverages will be available for purchase. Organizers prohibit attendees to bring alcohol into the Fairpark, but people can bring their own snacks.
